Why Queensland is Different
Queensland operates under one of Australia's most prescriptive fire safety frameworks. The **Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008** doesn't just reference standards; it mandates specific operational behaviors within its own clauses.
The QLD Mandate
Occupiers in QLD must ensure compliance with Section 32 (Maintenance) which adopts AS 1851, but crucially must also follow:
- Evacuation Exercises: Section 13 mandates exercises at intervals not exceeding 1 year, however, for high-occupancy or healthcare sites, the frequency is often internalised to a 6-month cycle to maintain the fire and evacuation plan.
- Warden Instruction: Section 11 requires staff instruction to be provided every 12 months, or within 2 days of a new staff member starting.
- Fire Safety Adviser (FSA): High-occupancy buildings must appoint a qualified FSA to oversee the plan.
